Future Fantastic (1996) TVrip English | AVI | XVID 1740 kbps 25 fps | 704x544 | MP3 128 kbps 48 KHz | 2.6 GB Genre: Documentary A series of Science Fiction documentaries on a similar theme to the X-Files only true stories. Some of the topics include aliens, our planet, technology and UFOs. Gillian Anderson has a wonderful performance hosting the show as she guides her audience through all of these topics showing in a very entertaining way what is fact and what is (still) fiction. Fans of the unusual--both science fiction and science fact--will appreciate this exploration of that frontier where the world of imagination meets the world of human invention. A wide array of science fiction stars, from Isaac Asimov and Frederick Pohl to Bruce Sterling and Neal Stephenson, share screen time with some of the most celebrated and notorious minds in science, from astronaut Story Musgrave and MITs Marvin Minsky to ufologist Bob Lazar, Survival Research Labs Mark Pauline and "bad boy of robotics" Rod Brooks (whose self-teaching machines were featured in Fast, Cheap & Out of Control). Hosted by X-Files star Gillian Anderson, the nine episodes of this joint production of the BBC, The Learning Channel, and ProSieben can be reminiscent of an old Dr. Who episode: a bit too fond of cheesy video effects, but rich enough with ideas to make the watching worthwhile. Most interesting is the comparison between the imaginary science of the authors and the actual science practiced in labs around the world. The real thing is far stranger, with geneticists growing flies with eyes on their feet, physicists actually teleporting subatomic particles across a room, and robotics engineers showing off a fully functional intelligent car that is capable of crossing the country without human assistance. The first episode, focusing on alien life and UFO conspiracies, is probably the weakest. But once the scope of actual scientific research sinks in, the show hits its stride, and youre guaranteed more than one moment of total awe. Future Fantastic was a British documentary television series which premiered in 1996. This show looked at the how science and science fiction complement each other, and how ideas and technologies from the past are helping to shape our future. The series was narrated by Gillian Anderson and co-produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation, The Learning Channel and Pro Sieben. This mini-series deals with many scientific and technical issues that one would usually think are the pure product of a scifi authors imagination: robots and cyborgs, aliens, parapsychology, future wars etc. Gillian Anderson has a wonderful performance hosting the show as she guides her audience through all of these topics showing in a very entertaining way what is fact and what is (still) fiction. So you learn, for example, that the technology of bionics is not only the underlying theme of a show such as "The Six Million Dollar Man" but also that there is a true historic background behind the show and that bionics will probably play a bigger role in the future of mankind. The most interesting thing about this show is, however, that Gillian Andersons demonstrates what science has achieved so far (i.e. in 1996) in all of these fields so that in the end you know that its not all pure fiction. Episodes 1 Alien: Discusses the possibility of encountering intelligent life on other planets. 2 I, Robot: Discusses the evolving and growing role of artificial intelligence, computers, and robots in our everyday life. 3 Starman: Looks at how we might eventually reach the stars. 4 Incredible Shrinking Planet: Looks at the future of transport, including teleportation and time travel. 5 Brave New Body: Looks into how body modification will shape our lives in the future. 6 Weird Science: Shows how we have come close to defying gravity, and achieving invisibility and perpetual energy. 7 Brainstorm: Looks at technology being put into and onto peoples heads to create artificial experiences. 8 Underneath a purple sky: Looks at the future of space tourism. 9 Immortal: Questions whether we may ever achieve immortality.
